This sort of counseling is for couples who aren’t sure if they want to keep their relationship going. It can also be used when one spouse wants to leave the relationship, but the other wants to keep it going. This style of therapy tries to assist partners in weighing all possibilities before deciding whether to work on or end a relationship.

Through discernment counseling techniques, I assist both parties in identifying how they contribute to marital problems and exploring possible solutions. When both couples better grasp what went wrong in the relationship and how they wish to move forward, discernment counseling is deemed successful. This type of counseling is especially beneficial for couples who have conflicting agendas. For these couples, discernment counseling can assist lessen possible tension between spouses as they consider whether or not to divorce and make the divorce process simpler if they decide to divorce. Suppose a couple enters couples therapy after going through discernment counseling. In that case, they may benefit from having already discovered the core relationship difficulties and what each partner needs to work on for the relationship to work.
